How Vedic astrology differs from Western astrology

People in the West often meet astrology first as a tropical Sun sign. Jyotish is older in India, sidereal, lunar, and timed by dasha. The two crafts share names and not much else.

Two starting points for the zodiac

Western astrology usually begins the zodiac at the spring equinox, 0° Aries as a seasonal marker. Vedic astrology begins from the fixed stars. Over centuries those starting points drifted. The result is practical: your Vedic Sun sign can differ from the sign you have said all your life. That is the first shock, and it is the one people search. It is not the deepest difference. A magazine horoscope and a janam kundli are different tools even when they happen to name the same sign.

Moon, lagna, nakshatra, dasha

A Vedic reading leans on the Moon, the rising sign or lagna, the twenty-seven nakshatras, and Vimshottari dasha. Those have no real equivalent in a sun-sign column. Dasha is a clock for a whole life, counted from the Moon's mansion, naming which graha runs the years. Lagna starts the twelve houses. Nakshatras cut the sky finer than twelve signs. Western tropical work has houses and aspects and outer planets Jyotish does not use in the same way. The shared vocabulary, Aries, Saturn, seventh house, hides how differently the two crafts are built.

What this house reads

VedicAstrology.com works only in this Indian, sidereal system. It is a personal Vedic astrologer in a familiar messaging format, from your janam kundli. If you want the Western chart, this is not that reading. If you want Jyotish, begin with your date, time, and place of birth. The first glance, Self, is written from the sidereal chart: who you are, direction, and what this period asks. Then you open a thread for work, love, money, family, or the rest. The reply stays with this kundli.

They can both describe a life

Sidereal and tropical maps can both be true of the same birth without one of them being a lie. They are different geometries. This house still chooses Jyotish. Another essay on this site, on how sidereal and tropical astrology can both be true, stays with that braid. The reading you get here will not mix the two skies in one answer. It will read the janam kundli you were born with.
