The first house of the Vedic chart
Western sun-sign columns usually say little about the rising sign. In Jyotish, the lagna is the first house of the Vedic birth chart: the sign on the eastern horizon at the minute you were born.
The other eleven houses are counted from it. Body, wealth, siblings, home, children, health, partnership, change, dharma, career, gains, and loss all take their place from that rising sign. If the lagna is wrong, every house is counted from the wrong sign. Work is then read through the wrong house. Marriage is read through the wrong house. A personal Vedic reading that skips the lagna is not a natal reading. It is a guess.
Why the clock matters
The rising sign moves about one degree every four minutes. A sign is up for about two hours.
Twenty minutes off is usually still the same lagna. If the birth falls near the change from one sign to the next, even a few minutes can be the wrong Vedic chart. That is a sharper need than a tropical Sun sign, which stays put for a month. People who say they do not know their time sometimes offer a round hour because it looks tidy. A tidy wrong time still builds the wrong kundli. If you do not know the time, wait until you do. A hospital note, a family paper, a register. That is kinder than inventing a clock.
Place of birth belongs with the time
Lagna also depends on where you were born. The same minute in two cities is not the same rising sign.
Longitude changes the local sky. Timezone history, including whether daylight saving was in force that day, changes the conversion from the clock on the wall to the sky overhead. Lagna is the start of the chart, not a costume
A rising sign is not a personality badge. It is the starting point from which the twelve houses are counted.
Grahas in the first house affect the body and the way you meet other people. The lord of the lagna, wherever it sits in the kundli, shows where that life is trying to go. The reading names the lagna because the rest of the houses depend on it, then stays with the question you asked. You do not need to memorise the Sanskrit. You need an accurate time, an accurate place, and a question from the life you are living.
