Why the two zodiacs give different signs
Tropical astrology begins Aries at the March equinox and keeps the zodiac aligned with the seasons. Sidereal astrology accounts for the gradual shift between that seasonal point and the fixed stars.
The two zodiacs now differ by more than twenty degrees, so a planet can appear in different signs in the two systems. The planet has not moved. The systems are using different reference points.
Two maps, one birth
The systems can describe the same birth differently because each has its own calculation and interpretive tradition. For example, a tropical chart may place the Sun in Taurus while a sidereal chart places it in Aries.
Western astrology interprets the tropical Taurus placement within its own system. Jyotish interprets the sidereal Aries placement together with the lagna, Moon, houses, nakshatras, and dasha. One result does not need to be inserted into the other system.
Nakshatras, not only twelve sidereal signs
Jyotish can be read through the twelve sidereal rashis. It can also be read through the twenty-seven nakshatras, the lunar mansions.
Each of the twelve signs holds three nakshatras, and those three do not share one planetary lord. Comparing only twelve Vedic signs with twelve Western signs leaves out this smaller division. VedicAstrology.com calculates a janam kundli in the sidereal zodiac, with lagna, Moon, nakshatras, and dasha. Answers here come from that Vedic birth chart. The tropical chart can still be discussed as another way of looking at the same birth, without replacing Jyotish.
A plain Ashwini and Taurus example
Suppose Mercury and the Sun are near the rising sign. A tropical chart may place them in Taurus and interpret them through Taurus qualities such as steadiness, patience, and attention to practical foundations.
The sidereal chart may place the rising degree in Ashwini and the planets in Bharani, both within sidereal Aries. Jyotish would then interpret Ashwini's quick beginnings and healing association, Bharani's Venus rulership and themes of restraint or creation, and the houses involved. The two systems are describing the same birth through different divisions of the zodiac.
