Whole-sign houses, from the rising sign
Jyotish commonly uses whole-sign houses. The rising sign is the first house, the next sign is the second, and the count continues through all twelve rashis.
This is why the birth time matters. If the lagna is wrong, every house is counted from the wrong sign, so work, marriage, children, and money may all be interpreted incorrectly. A few minutes can change the lagna when a birth occurs near the boundary between two rising signs.
What each house holds
The first house concerns the body, appearance, and how a person begins things. The second concerns speech, food, family resources, and savings.
The third concerns siblings, courage, and short journeys. The fourth concerns home, mother, land, and inner peace. The fifth concerns children, intelligence, romance, and past merit. The twelfth concerns loss, foreign places, sleep, and withdrawal. These are starting meanings. The planets in a house and the condition of its lord make the interpretation specific.
The question chooses a house
A reading starts with the houses related to your question. Love usually involves the seventh and fifth houses.
Work begins with the tenth, while income also involves the second and eleventh. Home and mother belong to the fourth, children to the fifth, and higher study to the fifth and ninth. The reading then checks the lords of those houses, planets placed there, relevant dashas, and current transits. This keeps the answer focused on the part of life you asked about.
