What karma means in a birth chart
In Vedic astrology, karma is not a punishment and not a moral verdict. It describes the circumstances you were born into and the tendencies that tend to repeat: family, body, work, relationships, and the years when those themes change.
A janam kundli is a map of those tendencies. The nine grahas show their quality. The twelve houses show which part of life they affect. Dasha periods show when a tendency is more likely to come forward. Answers on this site come from that map, about the life you are living.
The natal chart and dasha are two kinds of timing
Classical Jyotish distinguishes karma that is already formed from karma that is ripening now. The natal kundli is the first: the sidereal sky at birth, fixed for the life.
Dasha is the second: a timing system usually counted from the Moon's nakshatra, naming which graha is running the years you are in. You can have a helpful Jupiter in the ninth house and still be in a Saturn dasha that asks for work, limits, and patience. You can have a difficult Mars and be in a Venus period that favours ease and company. People often come to a Vedic reading when a dasha has changed, because the way they used to live no longer fits, and they want the name of the period they have entered.
