What is a janam kundli, or Vedic birth chart?

A janam kundli is the Jyotish map of the sky at your birth. Date, time, and place draw it. Lagna, Moon, grahas, houses, and dasha are read from that one chart, not from a sun sign.

Kundli, kundali, and birth chart are the same map

Kundli and kundali are two spellings for the same birth chart. Janam kundli means the chart of birth. It shows the sidereal positions of the lagna and nine grahas at the date, time, and place you were born. It may be drawn in a North Indian diamond form or a South Indian grid, but both formats contain twelve houses counted from the lagna. A kundli is not a daily Sun-sign horoscope. If the birth time is wrong, the lagna and houses may also be wrong.

What the chart actually holds

A janam kundli holds the nine grahas in sidereal signs: Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn, Rahu, and Ketu. It holds the lagna, the rising sign, which starts the first house. It holds the Moon's nakshatra, the birth star. It holds the houses: body, wealth, siblings, home, children, health, partnership, death and change, dharma, career, gains, and loss. Vimshottari dasha is counted from that Moon, so the kundli is also a clock. People who only know a tropical natal chart often meet a different Sun sign here. That is the drift between sidereal and tropical, more than twenty degrees. The reading on VedicAstrology.com uses the Vedic map only.

How a reading of the kundli begins

You do not need to memorise every house before you ask. Bring the birth as it was. The first glance, Self, is written from lagna, Moon, nakshatra, and the dasha that is running. Then you ask about the life you are in: work, love, money, family, home, health, study, travel, friends, meaning. A free kundli online that stops at a picture of the chart has not read anything. The picture is only the map. The reading explains what that map shows. Answers here come from that janam kundli in a familiar back-and-forth messaging form, not from a generic horoscope for the day.

What a kundli will not do

A kundli is a map of the sky at birth. It is not an instruction. It will not tell you whether to take a job, stay in a marriage, or move house. It will not name a day when money, a child, or a meeting must arrive. It will not say you deserved a loss, and it will not bless a choice you have already made. The chart can show which parts of life are strong, and which period you are in. The decisions stay with you. If you want that map read, bring the date, time, and place of birth as they were. Then ask about the life you are living.
