Mangal dosha, or being Manglik, in Vedic astrology

Mangal dosha, also called Kuja dosha or Manglik status, refers to Mars in certain houses of a birth chart. It is commonly considered in marriage matching, but it must be read with cancellation conditions and the rest of both charts.

What Manglik means

Mangal dosha is commonly identified when Mars occupies the first, second, fourth, seventh, eighth, or twelfth house from the lagna. Many traditions also check these positions from the Moon and Venus. Mars can add force, impatience, conflict, courage, or strong independence to the matters of the house it occupies. A marked result on a matching report is only the first check. It does not by itself show that marriage will fail.

Cancellations are part of the craft

Plenty of kundlis have Mangal dosha on a first pass, and plenty of those have bhanga, cancellation, when the rest of the chart is read. Mars in its own sign or exaltation, a full aspect from Jupiter, a matching Mars in the other person's chart: those are among the conditions jyotishis actually use. North and South Indian practice do not always count the same houses. Age is sometimes treated as cooling the dosha. None of that belongs on a yes-or-no calculator that never looks at dasha or the seventh house. If only one line of a matching report says Manglik, the report has not finished.

Mars, marriage, and the rest of the kundli

Marriage is assessed through the seventh house and its lord, Venus, Jupiter, Navamsha, and the dasha active when partnership develops. Mangal dosha is one factor within that assessment. Mars may function differently when it rules helpful houses, occupies its own or exaltation sign, or receives supportive aspects. Two Manglik charts are sometimes paired because similar Mars conditions may balance the match, but this is a traditional guideline rather than a complete judgement. Both charts still need to be read.

How a reading checks Mangal dosha

A reading places Mars in the sidereal janam kundli, checks it from the lagna, Moon, and Venus, and then considers cancellation conditions, the seventh house, Navamsha, and dasha. One Mars placement is not used as a complete judgement on marriage. Bring your date, exact time, and place of birth. If you are asking about a specific match, provide the other person's birth details too, then ask how Mars affects the partnership shown by both charts.
