The ashtakoot system compares eight factors from the two Moon nakshatras: varna, vashya, tara, yoni, graha maitri, gana, bhakoot, and nadi. Together they total thirty-six gunas. Eighteen is often treated as a minimum and twenty-four or more as favourable, while nadi carries the largest single score. These customs provide an initial comparison. They do not describe the whole partnership or decide whether two people should marry.
Why a high score can still be a hard life
Gun milan does not see the seventh house of either kundli. It does not see Venus or Jupiter. It does not see whether both people are entering a rough mahadasha in the same years. It does not see Mangal dosha, which is checked separately, from Mars in certain houses. Two charts can look fine on thirty-six gunas and still grind, because each person's partnership house is troubled, or because Saturn and Rahu are running together at the start. Two charts can look poor on nadi and still hold, if the rest of the sky is kind and the dashas do not collide. A number is easy to send around a family. A reading is slower.
What to read besides the thirty-six
Look at each janam kundli first, as a life. Then look at them together. Seventh house and its lord. Venus. Jupiter. The Navamsha, the ninth harmonic, for the tone of partnership over time. Dasha overlap in the years you actually have. Mars, if Mangal dosha is the worry. Compatibility here is not two sun signs compared. It is two sidereal charts, two lagnas, two Moons. How to ask for a matching reading
A matching reading explains areas of ease, tension, communication, attraction, responsibility, and timing in both charts. It does not approve or forbid a relationship.
